أناI محزونٌsorrowful فمنso who يبكيweeps مَعِيwith me
لاno أخٌbrother يشركُنيshares with me فيin جَزَعيmy anguish
I am sorrow-stricken—who, then, will weep with me?
I am sorrowful—who, then, will weep with me?
No brother have I to share my anguish.
No brother shares in my anguish.
حَسُنَhas become lovely الدمعُthe tears بعينيin my eye إنَّهاfor it
لاnot ترىsees منthe one who كُلُّهall of him منof بِدَعِmarvels
Tears have grown lovely in my eye, for it
Tears have become lovely in my eye, for it
sees no other wonder anywhere in all the world.
does not see the one who is all marvels.
أقطعI spend الدهرtime بجسمٍwith a body دنَفٍailing
وفؤادٍand a heart مستهامٍlove-stricken وَجِعِaching
I pass the years with a body wasted by sickness,
I pass my days with an ailing body,
while my heart is love-distraught and aching.
and a heart love-stricken and aching.
وقَفَdevoted الحزنُgrief عليهِto it نفسَهitself
ورمىand accused عاذلَهُits reproacher بالوَلَعِof lying
And grief has devoted itself wholly to my heart,
Grief has devoted itself to that heart,
and accused the heart’s reproacher of love-madness.
and accused its reproacher of lying.
