يا بَديعَ الجَمالِ ملءَ العيونِ
How you have made my eyelids sore with tears,
How you have ulcerated my eyelids with tears
O wondrously beautiful one, filling the eyes!
O paragon of beauty, filling the eyes

And you clothed a sorrowful lover in sickness,
And clothed the sickly youth in gloomy attire
His heart between a sigh and a moan.
His heart between sigh and moan

He tastes no sleep because of sorrows
He cannot taste sleep from the regrets
That have brought his soul and death together.
That gathered his soul and death

He found no comforter to whom he could complain
He found none to confide his woes
Of what he suffers—and who will share his grief?
What he endures, and none to sympathize
