ثُم أعدمتَ مقلتيَّ الهُجوعا
How you have made me weep blood and tears,
How you made me weep blood and tears,
then robbed my two eyes of sleep!
then deprived my two eyes of sleep!

O sovereign of beauty, with perfectly proportioned stature,
O you rich in beauty, well-proportioned in stature,
guarded from every gaze, a peerless wonder!
shielded from eyes, exquisite,

By the one whose love is the heart’s ultimate desire,

if I hope for but an hour of union, it remains beyond reach.
beyond reach whenever I hope for union!

How often I conceal my love for fear of a talebearer,
How often I conceal my love for fear of a talebearer,
and seek his favor, though he treats me cruelly!
and to please him, even if he acts badly.
