إلىuntil كمhow long ينحلُwastes away الصبُّthe ardent lover الكئيبُthe sorrowful
أتهجُرهُdo you forsake him? وأنتَwhile you لهto him حبيبُa beloved
How long will the sorrowful lover waste away?
How much does the sad lover lament
Do you forsake him, though you are his beloved?
When you abandon him though to you he's a darling
وكمand how often أدعوكَI call to you ياO مَنone whom لستُI do not أهوىlove
سواهُother than him ولاnor يرقhe relents ولاnor يجيبhe answers
And how often I call to you, O you—I love no one
And how often do I call you, though you I do not love
but him, yet he neither relents nor answers.
Except for him, yet he does not stir nor respond
أياO قمراًa moon علىupon غصنٍa bough رطيبٍtender
وياand O غصناa bough تضمنهenfolded it كثيبُa sand dune
O moon upon a tender bough,
O moon on a lush branch
And O bough enfolded by a sand dune,
And O branch that shelters it, O dune
عليكَagainst you بكthrough you استعنتI sought aid فإنfor indeed جسميmy body
عليكover you أراهُI see it منfrom كمدٍanguish يذوبit melts
Against you I sought your aid, for my body—
Because of you, on you I called for help, for my body
I see it melting from anguish over you.
I see it, because of you, melting away from sorrow
