ورأىand he deemed إِضرارهُhis inflicting harm بيon me حَسناgood
He kept my eyes sleepless and wore my body down,
He rested his eyelids and leaned his body
And deemed it good to harm me.
And saw that he had harmed me with beauty
رَقدتslept عيناكَyour two eyes ياO منone who طرفُهُhis gaze

Your eyes slept, O you whose gaze
Your eyes fell asleep, O you whose eyelids
Deliberately left my eyes no slumber.
Did not intentionally leave my eyes and tooth a chance

قلتُI said ماnot زالَceased عليناagainst us أوor لناfor us
The adviser said to me, “Love has worn you down.”
The advisor said to me, love has made you lean
I said, “It has always been against us or for us.”
I said, it still has not ceased for us or against us
ماwhat جَنَتcommitted a wrong عَينيmy eye وَماذاand what صَنعتdid
كيفَhow يوتىis assailed المرءُthe person مِماfrom what أمِناhe felt safe
What wrong has my eye committed, and what has it done?
My eye has not sinned, and what has it done?
How can a man be assailed by what he deemed safe?
How can one die from what we love?
