حَمَى جَفنَ عَيني الوَسن

ووَكلني بالحزَن

ووَكلني بالحزَن

He denied my eyelid slumber

My eyelids have fevered from wakefulness

and consigned me to sorrow—

And sorrow has been assigned to me

رَشأ لم يَزل طرفُهُ

رَشأ لم يَزل طرفُهُ

يثيرُ بديعَ الفِتَن

يثيرُ بديعَ الفِتَن

a young gazelle whose gaze has never ceased

A youth whose glance

to stir wondrous temptations.

Stirs up exquisite temptations

كتمتُ هَواهُ لهُ

كتمتُ هَواهُ لهُ

وخِفتُ عليهِ الفِطَن

وخِفتُ عليهِ الفِطَن

I hid my love for him, for his sake,

I concealed my love for him

and feared keen discernment on his behalf.

And feared the discerning

فَما أقلعَت مُقلَتي

فَما أقلعَت مُقلَتي

عن الدَّمعِ حتى عَلَن

عن الدَّمعِ حتى عَلَن

Yet my eye did not cease

My eyes did not cease shedding tears

shedding tears until my love was revealed.

Until my love was revealed

وَناداهُ وَجدي بهِ

وَناداهُ وَجدي بهِ

أيا حسناً يا حسَن

أيا حسناً يا حسَن

And my longing for him called out to him:

And my passion called out to him

O beautiful one, O Hasan!

Oh beauty! Oh beauty!

خفِ اللَه ماتَ الفؤا

خفِ اللَه ماتَ الفؤا

دُ شَوقاً وذابَ البدَن

دُ شَوقاً وذابَ البدَن

Fear God! The heart has died

For God's sake, the young man died

of longing, and the body has melted away.

Of longing and his body wasted away
