وأنand he groaned منfrom شوقهhis longing ومنand from كمدهhis grief
وأن من شوقه ومن كمده
He called to him, then his liver was seared,
He called him, then yearned for him with all his heart
and he groaned from his longing and his grief.
And that his longing and his anguish for him
لمdid not تبقleave behind أحزانهhis sorrows لمقلتهfor his eye
لم تبق أحزانه لمقلته

دمعاً فيبكي به على جسده
His sorrows have left his eye without
Left no sorrows for his eyelids
tears to weep with over his body,
Tears to cry with over his body

شوقاًin longing إلىfor منthe one who فؤادهhis heart بيدهin his hand
شوقاً إلى من فؤاده بيده
because longing within him has reached its utmost—
From the utmost longing in him
longing for the one who holds his heart in his hand.
Yearning for the one whose heart was in his hand

So his night was the night of the captive

Who sleeps fearing the morning of tomorrow
