اللَهُGod يعلمُknows أنَّنيthat I كَمِدُgrief-stricken
لاnot أستَطيعُI can أبثُّI express ماwhat أجِدُI feel
God knows that I am grief-stricken.
God knows that I am like one who is bound
I cannot express what I feel.
I cannot reveal what I find
رَوحانِtwo souls ليmine روحٌa soul تضمَّنهاcontained it
بلدٌa land وأخرىand another حازَهاheld it بلدُa land
Two souls are mine: one is held
I have two spirits, one harbored
by one land, and another land holds the other.
By a country, the other seized by a land
وأرَىand I see المقيمةَthe soul that remains ليسَdoes not ينفعُهاbenefit it
صبرٌpatience ولاnor يَقوىis strong enough لهاfor it جلَدُfortitude
And I see that the soul that remains is not helped
And I see she who stays is of no use
by patience, nor does fortitude suffice for it.
Neither patience nor fortitude avails her
وأظنُّand I think غائِبتيmy absent soul كشَاهِدَتيlike my present soul
فكأنَّهاso it is as though it تجدُit feels الذيwhat أجِدُI feel
And I think my absent soul is like my present one,
And I reckon my absent one like my witness
so it is as though it feels what I feel.
It's as if she feels what I feel
