بعينيكَbefore your eyes ماwhat ألقىI endure وتعلمُand you know أنَّthat ليI have
فُؤاداa heart سَيلقىwill meet بالهوَىin love آخرthe end of الدهرِtime
Before your eyes is what I endure, and you know I have
In your eyes I see, and know that I
a heart that will meet the end of time in love.
Have a heart that will love until the end of time
وتزجُرنيand restrain me العذالُthe reproachers عنfrom طاعةِobedience to الهَوىlove
وقدand indeed علِمواthey know أنthat لاno سبيلَpath إلىto الصبرِpatience
And the reproachers forbid me to obey love,
Yet reproach me for obeying desire
though they know there is no path to patience.
Though they know there is no path to patience
وقدand indeed كنتُI used to أخفيhide الشوقَlonging ماas long as سترconcealed الهوىlove
عليَّfor me فنمتthen revealed عبرةٌa tear بدمٍwith blood يجريthat flows
And I used to hide my longing as long as love kept it hidden
I once hid my longing as love veiled me
for me; then a tear betrayed me with flowing blood.
But a tear flowed with blood as I slept
فياso, O حسنَbeauty of أياميmy days وطولَand length of سلامتيmy well-being
ولذةَand sweetness of عيشيmy life لوif علمتُI had known منof الهجرِestrangement
So, oh, the beauty of my days and the length of my well-being,
O beauty of my days and length of my wellbeing
and the sweetness of my life—had I known of estrangement!
And pleasure of my life, if only I knew the pain of separation
