للذي ذَلَّ من الشوقِ فَلن

للذي ذَلَّ من الشوقِ فَلن

وإذا عزَّ الذي تَهوى فهُن

وإذا عزَّ الذي تَهوى فهُن

Be gentle with the one whom love has humbled;

Be gentle to one humbled by longing.

and if the one you love is exalted, lower yourself.

And if the one you love grows proud, be humble.

كُن ذليلاً للذي يشبهُهُ

كُن ذليلاً للذي يشبهُهُ

رشأٌ أحوَى وَبدرٌ وغُصُن

رشأٌ أحوَى وَبدرٌ وغُصُن

Be humble before whatever resembles him:

Be humble before one whom

a dark-lipped fawn, a full moon, a bough.

A dark-eyed gazelle fawn, a full moon, and a branch resemble.

وأطِع طرفَك فيه لا تقُل

وأطِع طرفَك فيه لا تقُل

ليتَ ما بي من هواهُ لم يكُن

ليتَ ما بي من هواهُ لم يكُن

Obey your eye where he is concerned; do not say,

And obey your gaze toward him; do not say,

“Would that the love of him within me had never been.”

“If only the love for him within me had never been.”

واعصِ مَن يَعذلُ في الوجدِ لِمَن

واعصِ مَن يَعذلُ في الوجدِ لِمَن

إنما يوماهُ نُورٌ وحسَن

إنما يوماهُ نُورٌ وحسَن

And defy whoever reproaches you for passion toward one

And disobey whoever reproaches you for loving one

whose two days are nothing but light and beauty.
