سَلا من سَلا كيف كا

نَ طعمُ الهوى أوَّلا

نَ طعمُ الهوى أوَّلا

Ask, you two, one who has forgotten love how

Peace unto peace, how it once was

love tasted at first,

The taste of passion at first

وكَيف بَكى وَاشتكى

وكَيف بَكى وَاشتكى

إلى اللَهِ فيما خَلا

إلى اللَهِ فيما خَلا

and how he wept and complained

And how it wept and complained

to God in days gone by,

To God in time's passage

وَهل كانَ جلداً على

وَهل كانَ جلداً على

مقاساةِ جهدِ البلا

مقاساةِ جهدِ البلا

and whether he was steadfast in

And was it resilient upon

enduring the hardship of affliction.

The suffering of tribulation

فإن شِئتما فاعذرا

فإن شِئتما فاعذرا

وإن شِئتما فاعذلا

وإن شِئتما فاعذلا

So, if you two wish, excuse me;

So if you wish, make excuses

and if you two wish, reproach me.

And if you wish, make reproaches
