وتَبكِي العَينُ ما يُدمى

وقلباً ذائباً سُقما

And the eye weeps for what is made to bleed,

The eye sheds tears that flow

and for a heart melting from sickness,

With a heart melting in gloom

وأجفانا تَرى الدَّمعَ

وأجفانا تَرى الدَّمعَ

على مُقلتِها خيما

على مُقلتِها خيما

and for eyelids that see tears

Eyelids seeing tears

encamped upon their pupils,

Camped on their lids

كأنَّ الليلَ يَحدوها

كأنَّ الليلَ يَحدوها

إذا نجمٌ تلا نَجما

إذا نجمٌ تلا نَجما

as though the night sings them onward

As if the night excites them

whenever a star follows a star.

When a star follows a star

ألا وأنالَني من لا

ألا وأنالَني من لا

يُبالي الجورَ والظُّلما

يُبالي الجورَ والظُّلما

Lo, and this was dealt to me by one who does not

Alas, he has afflicted me, one who

care about oppression and injustice.

Cares not for tyranny or injustice
