ومطّلعٍ على كمدِ الفؤادِ

وما بالمقلتين من السهادِ

وما بالمقلتين من السهادِ

And one aware of my heart's anguish

With an eye that sees into the heart's darkness

and of the sleeplessness in my two eyes—

Yet my eyelids know no sleep

بعثت إليه من عيني دمعاً

بعثت إليه من عيني دمعاً

جرى بدم المدامع والرقادِ

جرى بدم المدامع والرقادِ

I sent him tears from my eye

I sent a teardrop to him

that flowed with blood from the tear ducts and with slumber.

Flowing with the blood of ceaseless weeping

وناداه فؤادٌ مستهامٌ

وناداه فؤادٌ مستهامٌ

ألست ترى سهامك في سوادي

ألست ترى سهامك في سوادي

And a love-stricken heart called to him:

And a restless heart called out to him

"Do you not see your arrows in my dark core?"

Do you not see your arrows in my darkness?

فقال لمن دعاه أفق فإني

فقال لمن دعاه أفق فإني

مقيمٌ ما حييتُ على البعادِ

مقيمٌ ما حييتُ على البعادِ

Then he said to the one who called him: "Come to your senses, for I

He said to the one calling him, awaken, for I

shall keep my distance as long as I live."

Will remain distant for as long as I live
