And an eye whose mote is tears, whose tears are sleep,

sees in which eye its sleep flows.

It grew dim, without railing, from intense longing and weeping

over itself, the soul, the heart, and the breast.

It wept a tear, then milked blood from its eyelid,

which flowed in obedience to love’s anguish, sleep, and patience.

May I lose you, O eye! Long has my reproach endured for what it wrought

upon itself, for all the time that I remain alive.
