عليلٌan ailing one ليسis not يشبهُهُresembles him عليلُan ailing one
فكمso how often أشكوI complain إليكَto you وكمand how often أقولُI speak
An ailing one whom no other ailing one resembles.
A sick one unlike any other sick
How often, then, I complain to you, and how often I speak!
How much do I complain to you and how much do I say
تكلمتِspoke الجفونُthe eyelids بماof what لديهاthey held
ودزand was dispatched إليكَto you منfrom قلبيmy heart رسولُa messenger

and a messenger was dispatched to you from my heart.
And a messenger from my heart has come down to you
يقولhe says يظنis thought منthe one whom تيمتyou enthralled يَسلوhe forgets his love
وأينَand where إلىto السلوِّforgetting love لهfor him سبيلُa path
He says: “It is thought that the one you enthralled will forget—
He says, he who is consoled by you finds comfort
yet where is there a path to forgetting for him?”
And where can he find a way to consolation?

Relent, O He who has in every day
have someone laid low or slain by your glance.
By His glance, a slain man or a casualty
