We have a companion obsessed with disagreement,

    Often wrong, seldom right,

    More obstinate than a beetle,

And prouder, when he walks, than a crow.

When they mention a scholar in his presence,

He swells with envy or assails him with reproach.

And he holds no knowledge in his hand,

When knowledge is mentioned, save dust:

    Falsehoods compiled by Shawkar,

And other fabrications of Ibn Dab.
