Oh, who will aid a heart heavy with care and sorrow?

At evening it remembered Rayya, Umm Harun.

At evening it remembered her, after she had gone far away.

Time is harsh at times, and at times gentle.

If her love has now become a sorrow for us,

and her opinion now no longer accords with mine,

we once lived contentedly, with time gathering us together:

I obeyed Rayya, and Rayya did not defy me.

She shoots at the slanderers, never missing their vital spots,

with a true, concealed purity of affection.

I have a paternal cousin: he has his nature, and I have mine.

We have differed; I loathe him, and he loathes me.

It brought us low that our ostrich had risen—our unity had scattered.

He thought me beneath him; rather, I thought him beneath me.

God bless your cousin! You have excelled in lineage

beyond me, yet you are not my ruler, to govern me.

You do not feed my dependents on a day of hunger,

nor do you yourself suffice to help me in adversity.

If you seek this world's passing gains by belittling me,

that is not something that grieves me.

    وَما سِواهُ فَإِنَّ اللَهَ يَكفيني

    No disgrace is seen in anything but forbearance;

as for all else, God is sufficient for me.

Were it not for bonds of kinship that you do not preserve,

and fear of God concerning one who does not act as my enemy,

I would have pared you down beyond all mending:

I have seen that you never cease wearing me away.

Surely He who withholds the world's wealth and spreads it abroad,

if He has made you independent of me, will yet enrich me.

    وَاللَهُ يَجزَيَّكُم عَنّي وَيَجزيني

    God knows me, and God knows you all;

God will recompense you on my behalf, and recompense me.

What blame is mine, even though you are my blood kin,

if I do not love you, since you have not loved me?

If you drank my blood, your drinker would not be sated,

nor would all your blood together slake my thirst.

I have a paternal cousin who, if all men were in distress,

would remain girded with arrows, shooting at me.

Abbas, if you do not cease reviling and belittling me,

I shall strike you where the death-owl cries, 'Give me drink!'

Darm is my weapon; my mother is no herdswoman

tending pregnant she-camels, nor is my judgment deceived.

I am unyielding, unyielding, a guardian of honor,

the son of an unyielding, unyielding man, descended from unyielding men.

Compulsion draws nothing from me but refusal,

nor am I gentle toward one who does not seek my gentleness.

Upright and quick to depart, if in a land I fear

humiliation, I will not stay and endure humiliation.

Every man returns one day to his own nature,

even if he affects another character for a time.

Indeed, by your life, my mind is not closed

to a friend, nor is my generosity begrudged.

I possess the qualities of men of noble lineage

in dreadful encounters; no one is safe from my sudden assault.

    فَاِجمَعوا أَمرَكُم شَتى فَكيدوني

    You are a company exceeding a hundred;

so gather your scattered counsels, and plot against me.

    وَإِن جَهِلتُم سَبيل الرُشدِ فَأتوني

    If you know the path of right judgment, go forth;

if you do not know the path of right judgment, come to me.

I used to give you my wealth and grant you

my affection, firmly rooted and concealed within my breast.

Indeed, many a clan, fiercely contentious and full of clamor,

    I challenged, pledge after pledge.

I hurled their falsehood back upon their spokesman's head,

until they remained adversaries full of varied stratagems.

Abbas, if you stood by me, you would find me cheerful,

openhanded and noble, repaying whoever repays me.

By God, if my hand disliked my company,

I would tell it, since it disliked my nearness, 'Depart from me!'
