O Hind, O sister of the sons of al-Sarid,

I am not one to remain, nor to live forever.

If I reach evening owning nothing, yet I have

    commanded the fierce raiding band,

on the long-striding steed, steady in his canter,

when the horses flag—a steed bearing a distinguishing mark—

stout in both forelegs, sound in his splint bones,

like a chilled wolf in the bitter cold.

He strains against the bit until, when

the rider reaches forward with his forearm,

he finds a swimming galloper, never stumbling,

pouring out his first rush of speed, promising more.

He catches the wild ass for you on a sip of dew,

digging into the thundercloud's first rain.

Protective charms are tied about his neck,

for fear of evil eyes and the envious one.
