Ah, you have severed the tether to Salma,
yet brought no aid to what seeks support.

أَشَطَّ نَواهُمُ إِلّا لِماما
And the tribe’s departure took me unawares, when
their journey bore them far away, save for fleeting visits.

resting there at noon when the day stands still—

wrapped in fruit-sheaths and nearing harvest—

and scanned the clouds at the meadow of Alija.
فَإِمّاso if تُعرِضيyou turn away ياO سَلمُSalm عَنّيfrom me

So if you turn away from me, O Salm,
and I find myself saying not a word to you,

Then she brings me, on the fourth or fifth day,
to the waters of high summer, their pools brimming.

I startled the wolf digging at every trough,
and gnawing bones in their camel-resting grounds.

You would take their riding camels, in every pass,
when they stood in nose-halters, for ostriches.
