Who, do you think, will do me justice against a friend
Who do I see being just with me against a friend
who forever wears the garb of one easily wearied?
Who does not cease to wear the garment of distress?
كُلَّمَاwhenever أَطَافَgathered بِهِaround him العَاذِلُونَthe reproachers
لَجَّpersisted obstinately فِيin تَسَرُّعِهِhis haste بِالقَبُولِin accepting
Whenever the reproachers gather round him,
Whenever the blamers circle around him
he persists in hastily accepting what they say.
He is quick to accept in his haste
والوُشَاةُand the tale-bearers وَيْحَهُمُwoe to them لاnot يَنُونَtire

And the tale-bearers—woe to them!—never tire
While the slanderers - may woe be upon them - do not refrain
of severing the cord of union with a devoted friend.
From shortening the rope of access to union
كِيْفَhow لاَnot يَحُولُchanges هَوَىthe love of مَنْone who لَدَيْهِhe has
مَنْظَرٌsight وَمُسْتَمِعٌand a listening ear لِلْعَذُولِfor the reproacher
How could someone's love not change when he has
How can the passion of one who has before him
an eye and an ear for the reproacher?
A spectacle and listener to rejection not change?
لَوْif يَرَىhe sees مَوَدَّتَهُlove for him فِيin الضَّمِيْرِthe inner self

If he could see my love for him within my heart,
If he were to see his affection in the conscience
he would always meet me with kindness.
He would not cease to meet me with kindness
لاَno وَلاَand no كَرَامَةَhonor لِلْعَاذِلِيْنَfor the reproachers

No, and no honor for the reproachers!
No! Nor the honor of blamers
I will not turn away before the evidence is clear.
I do not believe before the proof is clear
لاَnot أَصُدُّI turn away مُتَّهِمَاًsuspicious لِلصَّدِيْقِof the friend

I will not turn away in suspicion of my friend.
I do not believe one who accuses a friend
My family and his belong to one tribe—
My family and his are of the same tribe

Souls harmonized in brotherhood
all professing, as their creed, love for the Messenger,
All professing love of the Messenger

Redeemer of mankind and guide of men
and for the appointed successor—his companion—and the Chaste Lady.
And his successor, the immaculate one

This one's merit is his companion's, while the enemy
The merit of one is for his companion, and the enemy
remains downcast with burning rancor.
Does not cease to be downcast with rancor
بَيْنَنَاbetween us مُوَاصَلَةٌa bond لاَnot يُبَتُّis severed

Between us is a bond; none can sever
Between us is an association that cannot be undermined
its like through an enemy's talk and hearsay.
By the saying of a foe or tales
وامْتِزَاجُand the mingling of أَنْفُسِنَاour souls بِالصَّفَاءِin purity

And our souls' mingling in purity
And the blending of our souls in purity
is like the mingling of falling rain with wine.
Is like the blending of rain in its generality

Yet an envious person may persist
Except that the envious may intrude
in meddlesomely coming between the two.
With impropriety between them

But he does not attain what he hopes for
no, nor will he lead them both astray from the path.
No! Nor lead them astray from the path

Of my precious possessions and bounties

Stay in your affection for me as long as you live
Do not seek—may you be guided—any substitute for it.
Do not reject a gift you have bestowed

There is no distance between us in glory:
There is no estrangement between us in excellence
each is his brother's means of access.
Each one is a conduit for his brother
