What a father I have lost!

I exhausted my patience when he died.

My sun fell from the sphere of

    glory—and glory has a sphere.

And my star grew dim, so now

my darkness has deepened and grown pitch-black.

    O my father, what sorrow

have you not left for a son bereft of you?

    You left him following

    your paths toward the heights,

and he was made to bear the burden that

your father had made you bear,

    after you had fulfilled—or

    nearly fulfilled—your hope in him.

I wish that in my own body

    I had borne your ailments.

I wish that I, for death,

had one day stood in your place.

It would be as though the days had not

    thwarted any stratagems but yours,

had none but you died among

    humans, jinn, and angels.

May God cover, with the grace of

    His pardon, your missteps,

    forgiving, not exacting

a full account of your deeds,

nor, to what was sent ahead

by your hands, leave you at that reckoning.

    O my father, every father

will one day be brought to your watering place.

And the living follow those carried off

by death, along the path they took.

    What amazes the

    weepers and your elegists?

Is it a bier that bore you,

    or earth that devoured you,

or the grave, so narrow in

    its confines—how it contained you?
