    Weeping—yet little does weeping avail—

over the loss of the prophets' descendants.

Though tears once hard to shed flow freely for it,

consolation once easy has grown hard to find.

to love of them clings to salvation.

By my life, passion's counsel has indeed gone astray

in hearts whose guidance includes my love.

The Prophet gave his charge, yet there lay

his counsels, cast aside in the open.

And before them, the heralds had commanded

that affairs be referred to the appointed successors.

The people did not unfold the rancor in their breasts

until death had folded him into a cloak.

And had they submitted to the Imam of Guidance,

their crooked ways would have been met with rectitude.

A crescent leading to right guidance, lofty in radiance,

    and a sword against unbelief, keen-edged;

and a sea surging with miracles,

as a spring of water gushes forth.

    Heavenly knowledge beyond attainment—

and who can reach the stars of heaven?

By my life, those who denied his right—

and how much worthier he was of allegiance!

And how many a battlefield where death's figure

was scarcely hidden amid the fear

he cleared! And if they deny his merit,

the forenoon sun has surely recognized it.

He showed it the battle-dust shortly before dawn,

and it came to him shortly after dusk.

And if the people were bereaved at their Badr,

the people surely broke faith at Karbala.

Mounts of sin, driven by song through the darkness—

so Iblis has no care but the driving chant.

The Chosen One's womenfolk were indeed dishonored,

    and grievous affliction befell them.

And they drove their men like slaves,

and seized their women like bondwomen.

So had their grandfather been present,

he would surely have followed their camel-litters, weeping.

Grudges born at Badr are kindled,

and the rancorous one's sickness is hard to cure.

You see him alongside death beneath the banner,

while God and victory are above the banner,

on the morning of the Imam of Guidance's host,

when the lion of combat had ravaged them.

and heads were sent flying through the air,

by blows like the rending of a shirt's collar,

and thrusts like the loosening of a waterskin's knot.

O my Lord's chosen among the virtuous,

and my Lord's choicest among the elect,

you were pure, and so became the praise of praise,

while all besides you were the satire of satire.

Through love of you I have discharged what I owe,

when I am summoned for decisive judgment.

And I am certain that, through it, my sins

fall away from me as dust falls.

So may the God of all creation bless you,

with blessings matching the stars of heaven.
