Time insists on nothing but base deeds,

and reversals that turn its blessings into misery.

And I used to see its face smiling,

then it gave me a scowling face instead.

And the calamities of time have made me gray,

and the events they bring turn heads gray.

And Time wrested from me the robe of youth,

thereby wresting away a precious treasure.

It reproaches me if I sit too long,

yet I sit so long for a reason.

And a sword may linger in its sheath,

kept safe; and a lion dwells in a thicket.

Shall I serve one who was my servant,

and follow one who has seen me as a chief?

Then I shunned my boon companion and wine,

and came to trouble my companion over it,

as though I had never galloped in a cavalry troop,

routing an army with an army's edge,

and hunted wild game in its desert wastes,

on lean-trained steeds that strained at their reins.

They terrified the gazelles with their forms,

    seizing their souls before their bodies;

and had never passed the cup among young men,

which we drank at dawn—potent, aged wine.

As though the cups in their hands

were stars of a sky meeting suns.

Oh, how many a day I enjoyed to the full,

in gladness at Baṭās or Bānaqūsā!

And how lovely the monastery, the monastery of al-Barīj,

where the bells answer the priests!

And a slender-waisted beauty—had she not swayed, no bough

of the gardens would have learned to sway.

And had she appeared before the Christians of the Messiah,

Jesus, they would have worshipped her instead of Jesus.

Whenever I wish, I give voice in her lap

to an eloquent tongue that stirs latent passion.

And a woman who urged me to ride across the wilderness,

and put my steed and hardy she-camel to work,

saw that I was content and did not seek

to meet faces that prolong their scowls.

Leave me to grapple with Time's vicissitudes,

and put on a garb for every circumstance.

    For when garments wear

out, men's skins become their clothing.

For I have seen the locks of noble men

turn gray when their heads are debased.
