غَدَرَbetrayed الزَّمَانُtime وَجَارَand dealt unjustly فِيin أَحْكَامِهِits decrees
والدَّهْرُand time عَيْنُthe very embodiment الخَائِنِthe traitor الغَدَّارِthe treacherous
Time betrayed and dealt unjustly in its decrees,
And time is the very embodiment of a treacherous betrayer.
وَرُزِئْتُand I was bereaved أَعْلاَقَاًtreasures عَلَيَّto me كَرِيْمَةًprecious
مِنْfrom قَبْلِbefore أَنْthat تُقْضَىare fulfilled بِهَاthrough them أَوْطَارِيmy wishes
And I was bereaved of treasures precious to me,
Before my wishes could be fulfilled through them.
وَفُجِعْتُand I was stricken بِالْقُمْرِيِّby the turtledove's loss فَجْعَةَthe grief of ثَاكِلٍa bereaved parent
فَفَقَدْتُso I lost مِنْهُin him أَصْنَعَthe most accomplished السُّمَّارِthe nighttime companions
And the turtledove's loss struck me with a bereaved parent's grief,
So in him I lost the most accomplished of nighttime companions.
لعوْنُhue (probable intended reading) الغَمَامَةِthe cloud وَالْغَمَامَةُand the cloud لَوْنُهُhis hue
وَمُنَاسِبُand resembling الأَقْلاَمِthe pens بِالْمِنْقَارِin the beak
His hue was the cloud's, and the cloud's hue his,
And his beak resembled pens.
وَمُطَوَّقٌand ringed مِنْfrom صِبْغِcoloring خِلْقَةِcreation رَبِّهِhis Lord
طَوْقَيْنِtwo collars خِلْتُهُمَاI imagined them both مِنَof النُّوُّارِthe blossoms
And he was ringed with the coloring of his Lord's creation,
With two collars I thought were made of blossoms.
وَلَطَالَمَاand how often اسْتَغْنَيْتُI was content فِيin غَلَسِthe gloom الدُّجَىnight's darkness
بِهَدِيْلِهِwith his cooing عَنْinstead of مُطْرِبِa musician الأَوْتَارِthe strings
And how often, in the gloom of night, I was content
With his cooing in place of a player of strings.
هَزِجُmelodious الأَصَائِلِthe late afternoons يَسْتَحِثُّhe urges onward كُؤُوسَهَاtheir cups
وَيُقِيْمُنَاand he rouses us لِلْفَرِضِfor the obligatory prayer فِيin الأَسْحَارِthe predawn hours
Melodious in the late afternoons, he urged their cups along,
And roused us for the obligatory prayer before dawn.
لَهْفَاalas عَلَىfor القُمْرِيِّthe turtledove لَهْفَاًgrief دَائِمَاًeverlasting
يَكْوِيsears الْحَشَىthe innermost heart بِجَوًىwith anguish كَلَذْعِlike the sting of النَّارِfire
Alas for the turtledove—an everlasting grief
That sears the heart with anguish like fire's sting.
وَلَقَدْand indeed هَجَرْتُI forsook الصَّبْرَpatience بَعْدَafter فِرَاقِهِparting from him
وَلَقَدْand indeed مَزَجْتُI mingled دَماًblood بِدَمْعِwith tears جَارَىflowing
And I have indeed forsaken patience since parting from him,
And I have indeed mingled blood with flowing tears.
مَاnot كُنْتُI was فِيamong الأَطْيَارthe birds إِلاَّexcept وَاحِدَاًone
هَيْهَاتَfar from it أَوْدَىhas perished سَيِّدُthe lord الأَطْيَارِthe birds
I was but one among the birds—
Far from it! The lord of birds has perished.
