تُرِيْكَshows you مُرُورُthe passing of اللَّيَالِيthe nights العِبَرْlessons
وَلِلْوِرْدِand for coming to water فِيin كُلِّevery حَالٍcircumstance صَدَرْa departure
The passing nights show you lessons;
and every coming to water must end in departure.
سَحَبْتُI trailed عَلَىacross الدَّهْرِtime ذَيْلَthe hem of الشَّبَابِyouth
وَمَاand not زِلْتُI ceased أَنْضيْهِwearing it out حَتَّىuntil غَبَرْit faded
I trailed youth’s hem across the years,
and kept wearing it thin until it faded.
وَلَمْand did not يَبْقَremain لِيfor me مِنْهُof it إِلاَّexcept كَمَاlike what
يُرَىis seen فِيin الرِّيَاضِthe gardens بَقَايَاthe remnants of الزَّهَرْflowers
And nothing of it remains to me except the like of
the remnants of flowers one sees in gardens:
سَوَادٌblackness أَطَلَّappeared عَلَيْهِover it البَيَاضُwhiteness
كَلَيْلْlike night أَطَلَّappeared عَلَيْهِover it السَّحَرْdaybreak
blackness over which whiteness has risen,
like night over which daybreak has risen.
فَرَائِيَso my view فِيof اللَّهْوِpleasure رَأْيُthe view of الَّذِيone who
تَقَدَّمَprepared beforehand فِيin الزَّادِprovisions قَبْلَbefore السَّفَرْthe journey
So my view of pleasure is the view of one
who lays in provisions before the journey:
بِبَزْلِby tapping الدِّنَانِthe wine jars وَعَزْفِand the playing of القِيَانِsinging-girls
وَخَلْعِand casting off العِذَارِthe bridle وَفَضِّand breaking العُذَرْmaidenheads
through tapping wine jars and the playing of singing-girls,
and casting off the bridle and breaking maidenheads.
وَنَادَىand called لِدَاتِيmy age-mates دَاعِيthe herald of المَشِيْبِgray hair
فَسَارُواso they went وَهَاand here أَنَذَاI am فِيin الأَثَرْthe tracks
The herald of gray hair called my age-mates,
so they went, and here I am following their tracks.
تُنَشِّطُنِيinvigorate me أُخْرَيَاتُthe last remnants of الشَّبَابِyouth
وَتَقْتَادُنِيand lead me along أُولَيَاتُthe first signs of الكِبَرْold age
The last remnants of youth invigorate me,
while the first signs of old age draw me along.
فَنَفْسيso my soul تَتُوقُlongs إِلَىfor الغَانِيَاتِbeautiful women
وَقَلْبِيand my heart يَهُمُّintends بِأَنْto يَنْزَجِرْrestrain itself
My soul longs for beautiful women,
while my heart considers restraining itself.
وَيَأْبِىand denies لَهُto it ذَاكَthat وَرْدُthe roses of الخُدُودِcheeks
وَصُبْحُand the dawn of الوُجُوهِfaces وَلَيْلُand the night of الشَّعَرْhair
But the roses of cheeks deny it that,
and the dawn of faces and the night of hair.
وَأُعْطِيand I give قِيَادِيَmy reins كَفَّthe hand of المُجُونِwantonness
وَأُخْفِيand I conceal فُنُونَاًvaried arts وَأُبْدِيand I display أَشَرْwanton glee
I give my reins to wantonness’s hand,
and conceal varied arts while displaying wanton glee.
وَأُكْذِبُand I deceive نَفْسِيmyself فيabout بَعْضِsome of مَاwhat
أَحَصِّلُهُI reckon it مِنْfrom حِسَابِthe reckoning of العُمُرْlife
And I deceive myself about some of what
I total in the reckoning of my years.
وَإنْand if نَزَلَتْalights فِيin جِوَارِthe neighborhood of الشَّبَاyouth (continued)
بِcompletion of 'youth' بَيْضَاءُa white hair أَعْجَلْتُهَاI drive it off أَنْbefore تَقَرْit settles
And if there alights in youth’s neighborhood
a white hair, I drive it off before it can settle.
وَأَكْتُمُand I conceal ذَلِكَthat عَنْbecause of خَطْرِهِits danger
فَيَفْضَحُنِيthen it exposes me عِنْدَهَاbefore her إِنْif ظَهَرْit appears
I conceal that because of its danger,
for it betrays me before her if it appears.
سَقَىmay water وَرَعَىand guard اللَّهُGod عَهْدَthe time of الصِّبَاyouth
لَيَالِيَthe nights إِذْwhen أَنَاI بالدَّهْرِabout the world غِرْinexperienced
May God water and tend the days of youth—
those nights when I was naive about the world;
وَإِذْand when عُذْرِيmy excuse وَاضِحٌwas clear بِالشَّبَابِthrough youth
وَسُكْرِيand my drunkenness بِهِwith it مِنْamong أَشَدَّthe strongest الشُّكَرْgratitude
when youth made my excuse plain,
and my drunkenness with it was among the deepest forms of gratitude.
أَصِيْدُI hunt وَتَصْطَادُنِيand hunt me تَارَةًsometimes
ظِبَاءُthe gazelles of القُصُورِpalaces بِسِحْرِwith the magic of الحَوَرْdark-eyed beauty
I hunted, and sometimes was myself hunted
by palace gazelles, through their dark eyes’ magic,
إِذَاwhen مَاindeed تَتَوَّجْنَthey crowned themselves with أَكْوَارَهُنَّtheir coiled headwraps
وَخَطَّطْنَand they traced فِيon العَاجِivory شَكْكَthe stitches of الطُّرَزْembroidery
when they crowned themselves with their coiled headwraps,
and traced embroidery’s stitches on ivory,
وَعَلَّقْنَand they hung سُودَthe black مَسَابِحِهِنَّtheir strings of beads
دُوَيْنَjust below النُّهُودِthe breasts وَفَوْقَand above السُّرَرْthe navels
and hung their black strings of beads
just below their breasts and above their navels,
وَأَوْمَضْنَand they flashed نَحْوِيtoward me بُرُوقَthe lightning of الثُّغُوmouths (continued)

and flashed toward me the lightning of their mouths,
revealing hailstones with musk and pearls within.
وَمَاand not كَانَwas أَكْلِيmy eating مَعَwith الغَانِيَاbeautiful women (continued)

And never was my fare with beautiful women
mere morsels, nor my drink from a tiny cup.
يُرَوِّعُنِيhe frightens me شَامِتَاًgloating بِالبَيَاضِover white hair
أَخٌa brother قَدْalready قَضَىfulfilled مِنْfrom سَوَادْblack hair وَطَرْa desire
He frightens me, gloating over my white hair—
a brother who has had his fill of black hair.
وَقَدْand indeed كَانَwas يَحْسُدُنِيhe envied me بالسَّوَادِfor black hair
فَلَمَّاbut when رَآنِيَhe saw me قَدْalready شِبْتُI had turned gray سُرْhe rejoiced
He once envied me my black hair;
but when he saw that I had grayed, he rejoiced.
وَمِثْلَكَand like you قَدْindeed صِرْتُI have become رَسْمَاًa trace عَفَاworn away
فَقِفْso stand بِيby me وَلاَand do not تَجْفُنِيshun me يَاعُمَرْO Umar
And like you, I have become a trace worn away;
so stand by me; do not shun me, O Umar.
وَسَاعِدْand help أَخَاكَyour brother عَلَىwith شُرْبِهَاdrinking it
بِمَيْمَاسٍat Maymas حِمْصٍHoms وَشَطِّand the bank of النَّهِرْthe river
And help your brother drink it
at Maymas in Homs and on the riverbank:
وُدَامَاًwine (uncertain reading) كّدِيْنِكَlike your faith فِيin لُطْفِهَاits delicacy
وَأَخْلاَقِكَand your virtues الوَاضِحَاتِclear الغُرَرْradiant
a wine as delicate as your faith
and your bright, radiant virtues.
إِذَاwhen رَقَصdances المَاءُthe water فِيin كَأسِهَاits cup
أَطَارَit sends flying عَلَىalong جَانِبَيْهَاits two sides الشَّرَرْsparks
When water dances in its cup,
it sends sparks flying up either side.
كَأَنَّكَas though you شَاكَلْتَهَاmatched it بِالصَّفَاءِin clarity
وَأَشْبَهْتَهَاand you resembled it بِالنَّسِيْمِin breath العَطِرْfragrant
It is as though you matched it in clarity,
and resembled it in fragrant breath.
تَمَكَّنَتِtook hold النَّارُthe fire مِنْof جِسْمِهَاits body

Fire has taken hold of its body,
leaving no cloudiness in its clarity.
وَحَلَّتْand it became lawful بِذَاكَby that لِشُرَّابِهَاfor its drinkers
وَأُطْلِقُand I permit مَاwhat كَانَhad been مِنْهَاof it حُظِرْforbidden
And thus it became lawful for its drinkers,
and I permit what was once forbidden in it.
ألسْتَdo you not تَرَىsee المرجَthe meadow مُعْشَوْشَباًthick with grass

Do you not see the meadow, thick with grass,
with lovely gardens, fertile and green?

As though what Tustar brocaded
and Susa embroidered were spread upon it.

And its tents have been pitched there,
and Tishrin has tempered heat with cold.

Its birds began answering one another,
as plucked strings answer the flute.
وجاءَand came الطُّهاةُthe cooks بماwith what نَشْتَهِيْwe desire

And the cooks brought what we desired,
from extra fare requested and what was on hand.

The blend was pleasant and the wine delicious,
and the Orontes was replenished with chilly water.
تَعالِيْلُdiversions إنْif أَنْتَyou أَغْفلتَهَاneglect them

Delights that, if you neglect them,
you will recall when remembrance comes too late.
فَخُذْso take منfrom صفاthe clarity of العيشِlife قَبْلَbefore الكَدَرْthe murk
ومنand from ظاهرِthe surface of الأرضِthe earth قَبْلَbefore الحُفَرْthe grave-pits
So take your share of life’s clarity before its murk,
and of the earth’s surface before the grave-pits.
