يَاعِوضَاًO recompense مِنْfor فَائِتٍsomething lost
يَاعِوضَاً مِنْ فَائِتٍ
لِمْnot يُحْتَسَبْwas expected مِنْهُfor it عِوَضْrecompense
لِمْ يُحْتَسَبْ مِنْهُ عِوَضْ
O recompense for something lost,
for which no recompense was expected!
يَاO دَعَةًease وَرَاحَةًand rest
يَا دَعَةً وَرَاحَةً
مِنْfrom تَعَبٍweariness وَمِنْand from مَضَضْpain
مِنْ تَعَبٍ وَمِنْ مَضَضْ
O ease and rest
from weariness and pain!
يَاO صِحَّةًhealth فِيin رِفْعَةٍexalted rank
يَا صِحَّةً فِي رِفْعَةٍ
صِرْتُI came إِلَيْهَاto it مِنْfrom مَرَضْsickness
صِرْتُ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ مَرَضْ
O health in high estate,
to which I came from sickness!
يَاO فَرْحَةَthe joy الرَّامِيof the archer إِذَاwhen
يَا فَرْحَةَ الرَّامِي إِذَا
أَصَابَhe hits بِالسَّهْمِwith the arrow الغَرَضْthe target
أَصَابَ بِالسَّهْمِ الغَرَضْ
O the archer's joy when
he hits the target with his arrow!
يَاO خِفَّةَthe lightness الظَّهْرِof the back إِذَاwhen
يَا خِفَّةَ الظَّهْرِ إِذَا
أُلْقِيَis cast off عَنْهُfrom it المُفْتَرَضْthe imposed burden
أُلْقِيَ عَنْهُ المُفْتَرَضْ
O the back's lightness when
the imposed burden is lifted from it!
يَاO مَوْقِعَthe onset النُّوْمِof sleep عَلَىupon
يَا مَوْقِعَ النُّوْمِ عَلَى
عَهْدٍacquaintance بَعِيْدٍlong past بِالْغُمُضْwith slumber
عَهْدٍ بَعِيْدٍ بِالْغُمُضْ
O the onset of sleep after
so long without slumber!
يَاO جَوْهَرَsubstance الحُسْنِof beauty الذِيwho
يَا جَوْهَرَ الحُسْنِ الذِي
سِوَاهُother than him فِيin الحُسْنِbeauty عَرَضْan accident (nonessential attribute)
سِوَاهُ فِي الحُسْنِ عَرَضْ
O substance of beauty, beside whom
all else in beauty is mere accident!
إِذَاwhen تَذَكَّرْتُكَI remember you يَاO
إِذَا تَذَكَّرْتُكَ يَا
مَنْone who خَانَbetrayed عَهْدِيmy covenant وَنَقَضْand broke
مَنْ خَانَ عَهْدِي وَنَقَضْ
When I remember you, O
you who betrayed my covenant and broke it,
ظَنَنْتُI imagined أَنَّthat بَازِيَاًa hawk
ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ بَازِيَاً
عَلَىupon فُؤَادِيmy heart قَدْindeed قَبَضْclutched
عَلَى فُؤَادِي قَدْ قَبَضْ
I imagine that a hawk
has clutched my heart.
