يَاO مُعْرِضَاًturning away عَنَّيfrom me بِوَجْهٍwith a face مُدْبِرِaverted

O one who turns away from me with an averted face,
While the faces of his world turn toward him,
هَلْis there بَعْدَafter حَالِكَyour state هَذِهِthis مِنْany حَالَةٍstate

Is there, after this state of yours, any state
Or end but a fall in rank?
أَوْor مَاnot عَلِمْتَyou knew بِأَنَّthat إِقْبَالَgood fortune الفَتَىthe young man

Or did you not know that a young man's good fortune
Is like vomit in its shifting states,
سَاعٍhastening إِلَىtoward النُّقْصَانِdecline يُسْرِعُquickens حَثَّهُits urging
عَجْلاَنَin haste يَقْطَعُtraverses كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday مَرْحَلَهْa stage
Hastening toward decline, quickening its pace,
In haste, covering a stage each day?
النَّاسُpeople أَكْفَاءٌequals وَلَكِنْand yet فَاتَهُمْhas surpassed them
بِالفَضْلِin merit مَأْمُولٌone looked to with hope أَمَامَahead of مُؤَمِّلِهْthe one who hopes in him
People are equals, but one surpasses them
In merit: the one looked to with hope, ahead of the one who hopes in him.
وَمِيَاهُand the waters أَوْجُهِهِمْtheir faces سَوَاءٌequal كُلُّهَاall of them

And the waters of their faces are all alike,
Except for him who grows rich through the humiliation of begging.
فَاجْعَلْso grant لَنَاto us حَظّاًa share مِنَof الحَالِthe prosperity الَّتِيwhich

So grant us a share of the prosperity that
Will soon be widowed of you.
لاَdo not تَسْتَبِدَّmonopolize بِمَاwhat مُنِحْتَyou were granted فَإِنَّمَاfor it is only

Do not keep what you were granted all to yourself, for
It is only a windfall, or a habit subject to change.
لَسْنَاwe do not نُجَشِّمُكَburden you with النَّوَالَlargesse فَإِنَّهُfor it

We do not burden you with giving largesse, for it
Is a hard undertaking, its burdens heavy to bear.
لَكِنْbut نَسُومُكَwe ask of you بَذْلَthe giving of جَاهِكَyour influence فَاحْبُنَاso favor us

But we ask you to share your influence; so favor us
With some of it, for its alms are paid by sharing it.

بِالمَكْرُمَاتِwith generous deeds وَلاَand do not تَدَعْهَاleave them مُقْفَلَهْlocked
And open your fingers while they can be opened,
With generous deeds, and do not leave them locked.
كَمْhow many مِنْof يَدٍa hand نَدِمَتْregretted عَلَىover إِمْسَاكِهَاits withholding

How many a hand has rued what it withheld
While it was busy, once it had grown idle!

Let not our gratitude and praise escape you,
Lest you bite your fingertip in regret over it.
