ماnot اعْتَادَhas visited عَيْنِيmy eye غَمْضُsleep
مُذْsince أَنْتَyou عَنِّيfrom me مُعْرِضُturning away
No sleep has visited my eye
My eyes are not accustomed to sleep
Since you turned away from me.
Since you turned away from me.
لَمْdid not يَبْقَremain إِلاَّexcept كَبِدٌa liver
حَرَّيparched وَقَلْبٌand a heart مُرْمَضُscorched
Nothing remains but a liver
Nothing remains but a burning liver,
Parched, and a scorched heart,
And a heart pierced with sorrows,
وَمُهْجَةٌand a soul عَلِيْلَةٌailing
جُثْمَانُهَاits body مُنْتَقَضُfalling apart
And an ailing soul,
And a frail body
Its body falling apart.
Whose limbs are all diseased.
مَاnot فِيْهِin it مِنْany جَارِحَةٍlimb
إِلاَّexcept وَفِيْهَاand in it مَرَضُdisease
There is no limb in it
There is no part of me
That is not afflicted with disease.
That does not bear an illness.
أَنْتَyou حَيَاةٌlife لِيto me وَمَاand not
لِيfor me مِنْfor حَيَاةٍlife عِوَضُa substitute
You are life to me, and no
You are my life, and without you
Substitute for life is mine.
I have no life in your stead.
