قَفَلَhas departed الدُّجىnight's darkness وأتىand has come الصباحُthe morning حميدَاwelcome
وتجاوبَتْand have answered one another أطيارُهُits birds تَغْريدَاwith birdsong
Night's darkness has departed, and morning has come, welcome.
The night has departed and the bright morning has arrived,
And its birds have answered one another in song.
Its birds chirping in response.
وجفتْكَand has shunned you لائِمةٌa reproachful woman وزارَكَand has visited you مُسْعِدٌa comforter
وغَدَتْand has come at dawn عليكَto you الشّمْسُthe sun تحمِلُcarrying عُودَاa lute
And a reproachful woman has shunned you, and a comforter has visited you.
Your blamer has become silent while your well-wisher visited you,
And the sun has come to you at dawn, carrying a lute.
And the sun has risen over you, bearing gifts.
وكأنّand as though ماwhat ينهَلُّpours down منfrom سَبَلِthe showers of النّدَىdew
أيْدٍhands نَثَرْتَyou scattered منof الجُمَانِpearls عُقُودَاnecklaces
And it is as though what pours from the showers of dew
It's as if the drops of dew falling
Were hands with which you scattered necklaces of pearls.
Are pearls you've strewn from your sleeves.
وكأنّand as though مجلسَنَاour gathering-place المُفَوّفِstriped فرشُهُits carpets
نورُthe blossoms الرّياضِof the gardens لَبِسْنَthey have donned منهfrom it بُرُودَاstriped robes
And it is as though our gathering-place, with its striped carpets,
It's as if the rug in our gathering place,
Were the gardens' blossoms, which they have donned as striped robes.
Has been clad in meadows' light.
وكأنَّماand as though الجاماتُthe bowls فيin جَنَبَاتِهِits sides
ماءٌwater أعادتْهُhas turned it back السِّمَاكُal-Simak جَلِيْدَاinto ice
And it is as though the bowls along its sides
It's as if the cups on its sides
Were water that al-Simak has turned back into ice.
Are water the heavens have frozen.
وكأنّماand as though الكانونthe brazier أُلْهِبَwas kindled جَمْرُهُits embers
أحداقُpupils of eyes أُسْدٍof lions يَدَّرِيْنَlying in wait for أُسُودَاlions
And it is as though the brazier, its embers kindled,
It's as if the brazier's embers
Were the eyes of lions lying in wait for lions.
Are the glowing eyes of lions, giving off smoke.
يكسوit clothes خدودthe cheeks الشَّرْبِof the drinkers منfrom نَفَحَاتِهِits wafts of heat
قبلbefore الكُؤوسِthe cups وحثِّهاand urging them round تورِيْدَاa rosy flush
With its warm breaths it clothes the drinkers' cheeks
It clothes the cheeks of drinking with its breaths,
In a rosy flush, before the cups and their rapid passing.
Before the cups and urging them replenishment.
نارٌa fire مُضَّرِمَةٌblazing ونارُand the fire of مُدَامَةٍwine
وكأنّماand as though يتبارَيَانِthe two compete وَقُودَاin burning
A blazing fire, and the fire of wine,
A kindled fire and lasting fire,
And it is as though the two compete in burning.
As if competing in fuel.
فالقُرُّso the cold عَنْfrom حجراتِناour chambers مُتَنَكّبٌkeeping clear
مَنَعَhas stopped التَّرَدُّدَrepeated visits فانْثَنَىso it turned back مَرْدُودَاrepelled
So the cold keeps clear of our chambers;
So depression has turned away from our chambers,
It has stopped its visits and turned back, repelled.
Prevented from entering, turned back.
وكأنّand as though نرجِسَنَاour narcissi ومضعَفَand the double blooms of وَرْدِنَاour roses
سَلَباboth robbed الجواريthe maidens أعيُناًof eyes وخُدُودَاand cheeks
And it is as though our narcissi and our double roses
It's as if our narcissi and layered roses
Had robbed the maidens of their eyes and cheeks.
Have stolen the eyes and cheeks of maidens.
فَهَبِso grant السَّعادَةَhappiness ليto me بِقُرْبِكَthrough your nearness إِنّنيindeed I
قَمِنٌlikely بقربكwith you near أنthat أكونَI may be سَعيدَاhappy
So grant me happiness through your nearness; indeed, I
So bring me happiness through your nearness, for I
Am likely, with you near, to be happy.
Am determined that through you I will be joyous.
فاحضُرْso come فإنfor indeed العيْشَlife ليسis not بطيِّبٍpleasant
لأخيfor a brother الصَّفَاof sincere affection ماas long as كنتَyou are مِنْهُfrom him بَعِيْدَاfar away
So come, for life is not sweet
So attend, for life is not pleasant
For a true friend so long as you are far from him.
For a brother when you are distant.
