بِأَبِي أَنْتَ تَبَاغَضْ

بِأَبِي أَنْتَ تَبَاغَضْ

تَ وَمَا كُنْتَ بَغِيْضَا

تَ وَمَا كُنْتَ بَغِيْضَا

My father be your ransom! You have made yourself hateful,

By my father you hate

though you were never hateful.

You, though you weren't hateful

جَاءَنِي مِنْكَ جَوَابٌ

جَاءَنِي مِنْكَ جَوَابٌ

كَانَ لِلْعَهْدِ نَقِيْضَا

كَانَ لِلْعَهْدِ نَقِيْضَا

A reply came to me from you

An answer came from you

that contradicted the pledge.

That contradicted the promise

أَنْتَ لَم تَمْرَضْ وَلَكِنْ

أَنْتَ لَم تَمْرَضْ وَلَكِنْ

أَحْسَبُ الوُدَّ مَرِيْضَا

أَحْسَبُ الوُدَّ مَرِيْضَا

You were not ill, but

You aren't sick, but

I think affection is ailing.

I reckon affection is sick

وَلَقَدْ فَاتَكَ لَهْوٌ

وَلَقَدْ فَاتَكَ لَهْوٌ

لِسْتَ مِنْهُ مُسْتَعِيْضَا

لِسْتَ مِنْهُ مُسْتَعِيْضَا

And indeed you missed a revel

And you definitely missed some amusement

for which you can find no substitute;

You aren't compensating for it

وَمُدَامٌ شَاكَلَتْ فِي ال

وَمُدَامٌ شَاكَلَتْ فِي ال

كَأسِ يَاقُوتَاً رَضِيْضَا

كَأسِ يَاقُوتَاً رَضِيْضَا

and wine that resembled, in the

And a lady resembled in the

cup, crushed rubies;

Glass a reddish gem

وَحَدِيْثٌ وَنَشِيْدٌ

وَحَدِيْثٌ وَنَشِيْدٌ

شَابَ نَحْوَاً وَعَرُوضَا

شَابَ نَحْوَاً وَعَرُوضَا

and conversation and recitation

And a tale and a poem

that mingled grammar and prosody;

Youthfully rhymed and scanned

وَغَرِيْضٌ مِنْ غِنَاءٍ

وَغَرِيْضٌ مِنْ غِنَاءٍ

فَاقَ فِي الحُسْنِ الغَرِيْضَا

فَاقَ فِي الحُسْنِ الغَرِيْضَا

and a fresh strain of song

And the coo of a song

that surpassed al-Gharid in beauty.

Surpassed the delicate cooing

لَو رَأَتْ عَيْنَاكَ مِنْ صَا

لَو رَأَتْ عَيْنَاكَ مِنْ صَا

حِبِهِ طَرْفَاً غَضِيْضَا

حِبِهِ طَرْفَاً غَضِيْضَا

Had your eyes seen in its

If your eyes saw from a lo

performer a downcast gaze,

ver a charming glance

وَثَنَايَا وَاضِحَاتٍ

وَثَنَايَا وَاضِحَاتٍ

كَبَنَاتِ الدُّرِّ بِيْضَا

كَبَنَاتِ الدُّرِّ بِيْضَا

and gleaming front teeth,

And clear curves

white as daughters of pearl,

Like daughters of white pearls

كِدْتُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ شَوْقٍ

كِدْتُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ شَوْقٍ

وَافْتِتَانٍ أَنْ تَبِيْضَا

وَافْتِتَانٍ أَنْ تَبِيْضَا

you would have nearly, from intense longing

I almost from intensity of longing

and infatuation, laid eggs!

And infatuation faded

وَلَوَ آنَّ اللَّحدَ وَارَا

وَلَوَ آنَّ اللَّحدَ وَارَا

كَ لأَسْرَعْتَ النُّهُوضَا

كَ لأَسْرَعْتَ النُّهُوضَا

And even if the grave had buried

And if I knew the grave concealed

you, you would have hastened to rise.

You I'd hasten to rise
