Is there a judge to grant me redress against a gazelle,

    unjust in all her ways?

Always turning away from me, so that no

thought of me crosses her mind.

Small, yet love of her has made her great

in my eyes, and prompted me to revere her.

She wards off eyes from her beauty

with a charm made from her wicked deeds.

A maiden whose paternal uncles boast

of the Persians, and the Romans of her maternal uncles.

I did not heed the reproachers concerning her, though

she listened to her reproachers' words.

She goes by night, and when she comes,

the sun comes with her coming.

I said, seeing her as I drew back

the trailing length of her skirts from her leg:

Had her leg not been made of hail,

it would have burned in her anklet's fire.
