Is snow falling, or is silver being cast?

Or is this camphor gravel being steadily crumbled?

The open earth rejoiced in it, as though

It laughed on every side with your mouth.

Its features turned grey, and its laughter revealed

Delight—though grey hair, as I know it, makes one devout.

[It alighted] upon the green branches, and they became

Like pearls threaded on rods of chrysolite.

And a mantle of it adorns the trees,

Soon to be torn apart by hands.

It was like Indian aloeswood, perfumed and turned

To a white hue, though it was pitch-black.

And the air, so full of fragrance, seems like

A robe scented now with ambergris, now with musk.

So take your share of the strings, for

Raptures stir only when they are set vibrating.

    For today heralds beauty; indeed,

The jars' wine will be spilled on it, unavenged.
