لَقَدْindeed مَرَّpassed by عَبْدُservant اللَّهِof God بِالأَمْسِyesterday رَاكِبَاًriding
لَهُhe has حَاجِبٌa chamberlain مِنْfrom أَنْفِهِhis nose وَمُطَرَّقُand a way-clearer
Indeed, Abdullah rode past yesterday;
In his nose he had a chamberlain and a way-clearer.
وَعَنَّتْand arose لَهُfor him فِيin جَانِبٍa side السُّوقِof the market مَخْطَةٌa nose-blow
تَوَهَّمْتُI imagined أَنَّthat السُّوقَthe market مِنْهَاfrom it سَيَغْرَقُwould drown
And at the market's edge, he blew his nose;
I imagined the market would drown in it.
فَأَقْذِرْso how filthy بِهِit is أَنْفَاًas a nose وَأَقْذِرْand how filthy بِرَبِّهِits owner is
عَلَىupon وَجْهِهِhis face مِنْهُfrom it كَنِيْفٌa privy مُعَلَّقُhanging
How filthy a nose—and how filthy its owner!
On his face hangs a privy of a nose.
