I bade her farewell, with longing's flame within my liver,

while parting drove soul and body apart.

A farewell of two lovesick lovers, who could not say goodbye

except with an eye's glance or a hand's fingertips.

She feared the talebearers' eyes, and so turned away,

biting, in her anger, jujube-red fingertips with hailstone teeth.

So the eye's first acquaintance, on the day she departed,

with tears was the heart's last acquaintance with fortitude.
