Here is the morning draught—what, then,

are you waiting for before taking your morning drink?

    Wake Abu Bakr, and call

    generosity's brother, Abu Umar.

And summon the beautiful woman; she will come to us.

A moon of hers mirrors the moon.

In her lap, fashioned from her lute's wood,

    is a silent one the string makes speak;

like a child, except that it is

made of juniper, not of human flesh.

Among young men endowed with beauty,

    eloquence, and distinction,

    practicing varied arts of conversation

and breathing the fragrance of blossoms:

    whether poetry or song,

    or discourse or nighttime talk.

So it is as though whoever converses with them

were looking through a beautiful book.

So the times of joy dearest

to me are the hours before dawn.

They are the virgin freshness of pleasures, and

the sweetest pleasures are the untouched ones.

So drink—may you prosper—and serve it

unmixed to your distinguished drinking companions.

And when a choice draught is passed around,

and joy carries away those who gladden you,

then fill the cups and call to them:

Is there anyone among you who takes heed?

And sing impromptu; she will answer

you with her lute, the bashful one.

Take from your days what is clear,

    and leave whatever is clouded.

For life is too short for reproaching

    time for its vicissitudes.
