Do you not see Egypt, how it has gathered
Within it all kinds of gardens in a single gathering:
All kinds of flowers in one sitting

Rose, the yellow of spring and the narcissus

As though it were the garden that collected
Whatever eyes and souls desire.
All that eyes and souls desire

As though the earth had been clothed in robes
As though the earth was clothed in robes
Of sumptuous patterned cloth and fine silk.
Of luxurious brocade and silk

بِحِلْيَةٍ شَبْرَوِيَّةِ المَغْرِسْ
So drink among the flowers some aged wine,
So drink to the flowers from a matured wine
Adorned, grown in Shubra.
With a Shobra dress and grafted orchard

مَعَ النَّدِيْمِ الظَّرِيْفِ والمُؤْنِسْ
And with it assail the onrush of cares,
And pray in Egypt’s hall of sorrows
With a witty and congenial drinking companion.
With a refined and comforting friend
لاَdo not تَخْشَfear إِنْif أَفْلَسَتْكَit has bankrupted you فَاقِرَةَa calamity
لاَ تَخْشَ إِنْ أَفْلَسَتْكَ فَاقِرَةَ

فَالظَّرْفُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ الفَتَى مُفْلِسْ
Fear no calamity if it leaves you penniless,
Fear not if poverty leaves you destitute
For a young man's refinement lies in being left penniless.
For refinement is when a youth stays unwealthy
