nor greet the face of the encampment from close by.

endlessly recalling a love speeding away on a packsaddle,

is reaching one's fingers toward a cup while drunk,

and raising one's voice in lilting song amid rapture.

Red wine—when unveiled in the cup, it was dotted

by its mixing water with dinars of bubbles.

How many seals has it renewed, itself still unbroached,

of eras—and how many epochs has it worn away!

by trampling it; so it exacted redress from the Arabs' heads.

adorned with a cross fashioned of gold.

How often I said, when his coyness offered

me death in earnest in the guise of play:

O you who laugh when your smile has made me weep,

is it fair in love that you make me weep and laugh at me?
