Rise, and slay care with wine,

For wine is the antidote to a hangover.

    And bring it, boy, unmixed,

    Red, with a yellow veil.

    فِي فَلَكِ الدَّنِّ لَيْلُ قَارِ

    A dawn of wine, overshadowed

    In the cask's sphere by a night of pitch;

And a body of light you see appear,

Like an eye in a shirt of fire.

From a graceful youth's palm, with lingering gaze,

And eyes of striking black and white, and coy reserve.

A bough of a figure upon a dune,

And a night of hair upon daylight.

Within the fresh-picked rose of his cheek,

His sidelock's basil has its orbit.

Masculine in his running and swaying,

    Feminine in coquetry, like maidens.

When he gives a lover drink in little cups,

His eyes give him drink in great ones.

There is no excuse, in his case, for one who sees him

Yet does not leave with his bridle cast off.

I drank wine from his cup,

And from his front teeth, the like of wine.

Until, when wine had set him swaying,

And drunkenness held him fast in languor,

And the wine mingled with the rose of his cheeks,

    Doubling it with pomegranate blossom—

We spent the night, a wrap enfolding us.

By God, what was enfolded in that wrap!

So think what you will of me, for I

Have committed whatever wickedness you wish.
