    And a hollow, lightweight thing, beloved for its moaning,

    its movements are stirred by our rapture.

    يُعَادُ إذا أَوْدَتْ به نَقَرَاتُهُ

    It has tongues fitted from material other than its own body;

    it is restored whenever its taps have brought it to ruin.

    And to the revolving celestial sphere it was likened by the one who

    sees it, for within it are that sphere's shape and qualities.

    Among the drinking companions, a woman [epithet unclear] embraces it,

    a buxom maiden, on whom its death and life depend.

    Its ears did me harm, yet good was done

    through that to our ears by its melodies.

    O soul, die, for grief has grown severe—die!

    I was not the first luckless lover.

    رماهُ ربِّي بِتَفْرِيقٍ وتَشْتِيتِ

    The day of parting struck my togetherness and scattered it;

    may my Lord strike it with division and dispersal!

    He wept until the morning of parting, when he saw

    my tears overflowing, and me in a state of bewilderment.

    And so my tear was molten ruby upon gold,

    and his tears were molten pearls upon ruby.
