An eye gushing with tears,
A heart overflowing with tears,
And a breast entangled in longing,
And passion mixed with sadness.

And a heart worn thin by a moon
A moon-like heart enchanted,
Who leaves minds stolen away.
Stealing minds with its brightness.

Before him stands a master who keeps him secluded,
Protecting it is its devotee,
Keeping his guards posted at his doors,
Guarding its doors without cease,

صَادَ قَلْبَ اللَّيْثِ فَافْتَرَسَهْ
Out of his fear for a young gazelle
Wary of it, though very gentle,
That caught the lion's heart and devoured it.
It captured the fierce lion's peace.

He wished, in his excessive jealousy,
Zealously its secrets keeping,
That the wind might be held captive,
As if winds themselves had ceased.

Fearing that it might carry to
Fearing it would bare my soul,
My soul, as it passes, his breath.
If I but whispered its name.
