Baghdad, we have come in reproach, so hear my reproach.

Pour us wine into two cups, and draw near.

Baghdad, we have come as riverbanks whose river is dry,

While the water around you is a flowing stream of gold.

Whom, then, shall we reproach if we spare you reproach,

While you are wounds within us that have not yet healed?

Glory and history stand before you, so blaze up

As a fire of love, not a fire of firewood.

Glory and history stand before you, so burst forth

As a sun, as of old—or, if you wish, protest.

Where shall I begin, or where is my ending?

Indeed, the beginning suffers at the hand of wonder.

Send to my eyes, from your eyes, a blazing

Glow of light, or an unveiling of what is hidden.

    إليك يُصغي فخطى أعذبَ الكتب ِ

    Extend a vein, for there is room in the artery;

It listens to you, so inscribe the sweetest books.

Poetry stalled until it nearly put me to shame,

And my sea, from sorrow, nearly betrayed me.

Today a rabble torments you with hatreds,

The chastity of treachery and lies is purer than they are.

    لا يرتضونك عِرقا ً طّيبَ النسَّب ِ

    They will not accept you as a warm bosom for a brother;

They will not accept you as a bloodline of noble descent.

They distort history through you, so beware

Of innocence, and guard against calamity.

They squander arts of yours that we know:

Poetry and prose and a history of literature.

As though Baghdad were no longer anything but pain,

And had turned to unripe dates after dried dates and fresh-ripe ones.

As though Baghdad were glories and an epic

Of hatred toward Islam and the Arabs.

Love's charge is that I offer you, from my writing,

A letter of blame in a cup of reproach.

And if I complain to you, since an embrace has grown elusive,

And union with you has grown elusive for no reason—

You killed a gleam within us, the sustenance of a broken soul,

Who wrestles with dawn on the crutch of weariness.

You deliberately lost a path to al-Aqsa,

So hatred led you, like a tail, into vendettas.

    تغيرَ الفـتحُ يا مسـلوبةَ الغضـب ِ

    And your conquest was glory before al-Andalus;

The conquest has changed, O you robbed of anger.
