ليI have شاغِلٌan absorbing concern بِجَمالِكَwith your beauty الْفَتَّانِbewitching
لي شاغِلٌ بِجَمالِكَ الْفَتَّانِ
What have I to do with love poetry about homelands?
What is my concern with roaming the homelands
I am absorbed in your bewitching beauty.
When your alluring beauty preoccupies me

The saliva and the mouth are al-Udhayb and Bariq;
Your saliva, lips, charming smile, and lightning teeth
and your tunic is buttoned over Nu'man.
Your cheeks adorned on Nu'man's bounty

مَلَّ الْجِنانَ فَفَرَّ مِن رِضْوانِ
Drowsy, with a houri's qualities, he seems
A radiant mouth of houris in nature as though
to have wearied of Paradise and fled from Ridwan.
It filled the heavens then fled from bliss

فَتَرَنَّحا كالْعاشِقِ الْوَلْهانِ
The night of his hair grew long over his two sides,
Her night of hair flowed over her shoulders
so they swayed like a love-distraught lover.
She sighed like a swooning lover

The myrtle of his cheek-down grew green above the roses,
Above roses her braids were greener
and I marveled at gardens amid fires.
I was amazed by gardens amidst fires

Our eyes went mad at his wondrous appearance,
Your eyes were delighted by his beautiful sight
and were chained with the tears of our eyelids.
Then overflowed with tears from the eyelids

My love poetry about him and my praise of Musa are a garden
My love poem and Moses' praise are a garden
uniting the arts of beauty and beneficence.
That combined beauty and benevolence

A king with whom the times turned green as though
the days of his reign were a second spring.
The days of his rule were a second spring

His soil grew rich after his domain's drought
He enriched it after its decline with might
through the ceaseless downpour of his rain-laden cloud.
With the persistence of his pouring clouds

وَلِكُلِّ غُصْنٍ هِزَّةُ النَّشْوانِ
So every morning cloud has smooth-flowing nectar,
So every rose has a dangling necklace
and every branch the sway of one intoxicated.
And every branch has the shook of delightedness

The river is a cheek made rosy by sunlight,
The river's cheek is reddened by the rays
where the cheek-down of the ban tree's shadow has crept.
As the charm of shade crept through it

The water at the stems of the boughs forms anklets
And the water in the lanes of branches is anklets
of silver, while the flowers are like crowns.
Of silver and flowers like crowns

It is as though its bird were an eloquent preacher
So it's as if their songbird is a melodious orator
standing above the pulpits of the branches.
Who stands atop the minbars of branches

and delight in its inarticulate speech and my eloquence—
And delight in the marvel of his speech and my verse

A cup, when I clasp it, my hand glistens
made of silver and filled with pure gold.

By God, if the Magians understood its cup,
By God, if the Magi were reasonable with his cup
they would have made it a temple for worshipping fire.
They would make it their temple of fire

Intoxication with wine and gratitude to Musa are my creed;
The wine's inebriation and thanking Moses are my ways
through my obedience I have surely erased my disobedience.
For I have erased my sins with my obedience

My occupation is praising him while others ceaselessly
like owls, lament the ruined walls.
Are like owls lamenting the ruins

The deserts and swift, high-humped camels have their people;
Labid, Kumait, and renowned peers
time has steered their fortunes away from mine.
Time has turned from their glory to mine

Especially when the departure burns and mirages whirl
above the mirage the thirsty man's last spark of life;
Above the horizon with the cravings of thirst

They cured themselves of flush with ash

So why should I vent my passions to disasters
when Sultan al-Ashraf has enriched me?
When the noblest of sultans has enriched me

We said, the rending of her shirt in her chest
'This is the embrace of a love-distraught lover.'
Is the embrace of a swooning lover

Had Moses asked for refuge from them
it would have escaped and found the surest refuge.
He would have survived and awakened in greatest safety

He cleared from Islam the darkness of their unbelief,
So he dispelled the darkness of their disbelief
and restored it to glory after humiliation.
And restored glory after humiliation

In the shade of an eternal Sultanate
