This is the dwelling; its grounds give you no solace
This is the quarter, what will its plentitude avail me
after the beloved has gone, nor does its fragrance quench your thirst.
After the beloved, nor will its watering quench my thirst

As though it were the sanctuary visited by pilgrims, and the standard
As if it were the forbidden sanctuary, and the banner
raised aloft, toward which those who loved it hasten.
Which waves, calling to it the hearts of those who yearn
شَوقيmy longing لِمَنْfor one whose يَدُthe hand موسىof Moses مِثْلُis like مَبْسِمِهِhis smiling mouth

I long for one whose smiling mouth is like Moses' hand,
My passion for one whose hand is like Moses’ smile
when I sip whiteness from his front teeth.
When I quaff whiteness from between his lips

Alas for the reproacher! Has he not seen? For in him we find
Woe to celibacy! Does he not see among us
likenesses of Joseph of the nations of old.
The Josephs of nations past their likeness?

Leave me be, for my heart has not forgotten love for an idol
Leave me be, my heart asked not about passion for an idol
whom the Lord of mankind fashioned to tempt mankind.
For the people’s seduction, the Lord of men made him
مَنْwhoever لَمْhas not يُضَمْbeen wronged وَيُذِلَّand humbles الحُبُّlove عِزَّتَهُhis pride

فَماthen ... not يُصَحِّحُupholds قاضِيthe judge الحُبِّof love دَعْواهُhis claim
Whoever has not been wronged, nor had his pride humbled by love—
He whose pride and humility love did not subdue
the judge of love will not uphold his claim.
The judge of love will not validate his claim

He appeared and said, 'Who is wronged?' I said, 'A youth
He appeared and asked who is wronged, I said a youth
whom you barred from quenching his mouth with the moisture of your teeth.'
Whose injustice prevented to wet his mouth

His lover has found no refuge in forgetting him,
No immunity availed his lover from him
as though his eyes were fettered by beauty.
As if his eyes were chained by beauty
ياO مَنْyou who إِذْاwhen قِيسَis compared بِالبَدْرِwith the full moon المُنِيرِradiant فَقَدْthen indeed

O you who, when compared with the radiant full moon, are indeed
O you who if compared to the shining full moon
wronged by whoever sets you equal to it.
Has wronged the one who compared you to the full moon
إِنْif كانَhe has قَدْindeed ظَلَمَwronged المُشْتاقَthe yearning lover إِنَّindeed لَهُhe has

If he has wronged the yearning lover, that lover surely has
If he who longs is oppressed, he has
a patron who wards harm off him and refuses it:
A Master who will spare him harm and forbid it

Musa the generous; his hater is wounded. What, then,
Generous Moses and his speech with the Speaker! What
can you say, when God has saved him and spoken privately with him?
Can you say, and God saved and delivered him?
يُعْطِيhe gives الجَزِيلَlavish gifts وَيَعْلُوُهand overcomes him حَياmodesty كَرَمٍof generosity

He gives abundantly, yet noble modesty comes over him,
He gives abundantly and exalts the living generosity
as though he were begging from the one he had given to.
As if he were a beggar whom gave to him
نِيطَتْwas bound سَعادَةُthe happiness دُنْياهُof his worldly life بِأُخْرَاهُto his hereafter

His happiness in this world is bound to his hereafter;
His worldly fortune is tied to his Hereafter
thus he is blessed, and his worldly life is like his hereafter.
So he is happy and his world is like his Hereafter

Splendor rests upon petitioners when first they are greeted
Upon the poor there was splendor when He initiated them
by a gift from him; his two hands never restrain him.
With gifts from Him, what sufficed them, sufficed them

An awe and brilliance of light veiling Him
from sight. O Musa, may God be your helper!
From the eyes, so O Moses, God be to you

Look: you will see everyone on earth in one man.
Look and see every person on earth in a man
God is greatest! All mankind is he alone.
God is Greatest, there is no god but He

He is the house of the caliphate and beneficence, brought into being
The house of the Caliphate and benevolence He originated
for us by the Lord of His servants—no, may we never lose him!
The Lord of worshipers for us, do not let us lose it

The might of his resolve kindled the glances of keen blades,
He provoked the battlefields whose determination’s zeal
so none but his detachments have raided and taken captives.
His raiding parties never raided nor captured but them
ياO مَنْyou who إِذْاwhen مَاemphasis عَدِمْناwe lack الدُّرَّpearls أَوْجَدَنَاyou provide us with

O you who, whenever we lack pearls, provide us with
O You who when we lost the pearls provided us
speech that makes the costliest pearls cheap among men.
With words discounted among the people their price
كَمِhow often اصْطَنَعْتَyou have shown favor وَكَمْand how much أَوْلَيْتَنِيَyou bestowed on me حَسَناًkindness

How often you have shown favor, and how much kindness you have bestowed on me!
How much You have done and how much good You have granted me
So the greatest gratitude cannot match the least of it.
The extent of thanks cannot reach its bottom

May blessings endure for us through him; he has kept us safe
By it may blessings continue upon us and secure us
from what we fear; may God perpetuate his bounty.
From what we fear, may God make His blessings last

Be loyal to him: you will sleep amid life's sweetness and plenty,
My Lord live comfortably in ease and plenty
and do not be like the ill-fated man who opposed him.
And be not like the wretched evil-fortuned one who envied Him
وَرِثْتَmay you inherit نُوحاًNoah نَبِيَّthe prophet اللَّهِof God فِيin عُمُرٍa lifespan

May you inherit from Noah, God's prophet, a lifespan
You inherited Noah the Prophet of God in an age
whose utmost reach surpasses the bounds of days.
That exceeds the extent of days in its end
أَرْجُوI hope for لِقَاءَكَmeeting you لاnot مالاًwealth وَمَنْزِلَةًand rank

I hope to meet you—not for wealth or rank;
I hope to meet you not for wealth or status
for you are my means, and God is the provider.
For you are to me the cause and God is the Provider

So enrich me, O son of the possessor of lofty glory, and be
So enrich me O son of the most high glory and be
my helper in what I hope for and what I fear.
A source of joy for me in what I hope and fear
