ياO قَلْبُheart كَمْhow long ذاthis الَّلجَجُobstinacy الفاضِحُdisgraceful
راحَwent off بِكَwith you البارِحُthe ill omen والسَّانِحُand the auspicious omen
O heart, how long this shameful persistence?
O heart, how much is this turbulent flood
Ill and auspicious omens have carried you away.
That swept you yesterday and is sweeping you today
شَقِيتَyou suffered فِيin الحُبِّlove وَأَشْقَيْتَنِيand made me suffer
وَرُبَّand many a جِدٍّserious affair جَرَّهُbrought it on مازِحُa jester
You have suffered in love and made me suffer;
You suffered in love and made me suffer
And many a serious affair has been brought on by a jester.
And many serious things were dragged by jest
هَوِيْتُهُI loved him بَدْراًa full moon عَلىupon بانَةٍa ben-tree
عَلىupon نَقاًa sand dune مُثْقَلُهُits heavy bulk راجِحُweighty
I loved him—a full moon upon a ben-tree,
I loved him like a full moon over a lofty dune
Upon a sand dune of ponderous bulk.
On a tender palm tree heavily laden
اللَّيْلُnight فِيin طُرَّتِهِhis forelock مُبْهَمٌimpenetrably dark
عَلىabove جَبِينٍa forehead صُبْحُهُits dawn واضِحُclear
Night in his forelock is impenetrably dark,
The night in its shawl is vague
Above a forehead whose dawn is clear.
Upon a forehead whose morning is clear
كَأَنَّماas though العَارِضُthe cheek down فِيon خَدِّهِhis cheek
نَمْلٌants إِلَىtoward شَهْدِthe honey اللَّمَىthe lips' dark hue سارِحُroaming
It is as though the down on his cheek
As if the someone glancing at his cheek
Were ants roaming toward the honey of his dusky lips.
Is an ant heading to the nectar of beauty
لَوْif ذُقْتَyou tasted لاmay you not ذُقْتَtaste جَنَىthe fruit رِيقِهِhis saliva

If you tasted—may you never taste it!—the fruit of his saliva,
If you tasted, you would have tasted the saliva of his mouth
From his gleaming pearls, O adviser,
From his shining pearls, O sincere advisor
عَذَرْتَyou would excuse مَنْthe one whom أَنْتَyou لَهُtoward him لائِمُblaming
رَحِمْتَyou would pity مَنْthe one whom أَنْتَyou لَهُtoward him كاشِحُbearing malice
You would excuse the one whom you blame;
You excused whom you blame
You would pity the one toward whom you bear malice.
And pitied whom you accuse
تَظنَّهُyou think him لَمَّاwhen رَناhe gazed وَانْثَنَىand swayed
أَعْزلunarmed وَهْوَthough he is السَّائِفُthe swordsman الرَّامِحُthe spearman
You think him, when he gazes and sways,
You thought, when he was soft and pliant,
Unarmed, though he is a swordsman and spearman.
That he was chaste, yet he is the penetrating assailant
القَلْبُthe heart مِنِّيwithin me طائِرٌa bird خافِقٌfluttering
وَاللَّحْظُand the glance مِنْهُfrom him كاسِرٌa bird of prey جارِحُwounding
My heart is a fluttering bird,
My heart is a bird fluttering from me
And his glance a swooping, wounding bird of prey.
And my gaze from it is a breaking assailant
سَقَىhe gave drink وَزادَand added to الكَأْسَthe cup مِنْfrom طَرْفِهِhis gaze

فَكُلُّناso all of us مِنْfrom سُكْرِهِhis intoxication طافِحُoverflowing
He gave us drink and added to the cup from his gaze;
He quenched us and increased the cup from his mouth’s edge
So all of us brim with intoxication from him.
So we are all drunk with its intoxication
راحٌwine تَطِيرُflies النَّارُfire مِنْfrom دَنِّهاits wine jar
كَأَنَّماas though بازِلُهاthe one tapping it قَادِحُa spark-striker
Wine: fire flies from its jar,
A gazelle whose fire burns from its farness
As though the one tapping it were striking sparks.
As if its guardian is the igniting kindler
أَْنَكَرهاhe denied it الخَمَّارُthe wine-seller ضَنّاًout of stinginess بِهاwith it

The wine-seller denied having it, loath to part with it,
The wine-pourer denied it avariciously
Until its wafting fragrance guided us.
Until its strong fragrance guided us
فُزْنَاwe won بِهاwith her عَذْراءَa virgin غانِيةًa beauty

We won her, a virgin beauty,
We found through it a singing virgin
Her seal intact: no opener had deflowered her.
With a seal unbroken by any deflowerer

O sleeper, while the star is setting,
O sleeping one, while the star is setting
And dawn appears from its eastern horizon,
And the dawn is brilliant from its rising place

Leave life's murk and take what is clear;
Leave life's disturbances, and take the pure
You will live, while the tireless toiler suffers.
To live, while the toiling distressed one complains

The dew has sprinkled the hills' mantle,
The dark night has donned the dress of monks
And the lowing beast and singing bird have mingled their calls.
And the raging thunderer and cloudburst roar
وَجَادَتِand was generous الدُّنْياthe world عَلىto أَهْلِهَاits people

And the world has been generous to its people,
The world was generous to its people
And al-Ashraf and al-Salih have made peace.
And the noble and righteous became reconciled

Two honorable and generous kings
A sea, and the other a cloud pouring rain.
One has a sea and the other a pouring rain

Two mountains for the earth, they are its refuge;
Two pillars for the land they have reconciled
Two full moons by which the beholder seeks guidance.
Two full moons guided by the bright one

When Musa and Mahmud came together,
Moses and Mahmoud when they come together
I said—and my words are true and clear:
I say and my words are clear and true

This is Yusuf, his brother restored to him,
This is Joseph whose brother has returned to him
And that yearning, far-off one is no more.
And that disputant and troublemaker has died

Today the cheeks of the foes are seared
Today the pages of enmity pray
In the fires of a war whose wind is scorching.
The fires of war whose winds blow
اليَوْمَtoday تَهْتَزُّquiver مُتونُthe shafts القَناof the spears

Today the shafts of the spears quiver,
Today the bases of spears shake
And the long-limbed steed, striking sparks, takes flight.
And the igniting sparks fly

Today the abode of polytheism is inhabited:
Today the house of polytheism is inhabited
The shrieker and the mourner take shelter there.
By those wailing and crying

Musa, may God reward you for your service to His faith
Moses, may God reward you for His religion
With good, for the panegyrist has not done you justice.
With goodness, though the praisers were not fair to you
سَعَيْتَyou strove فِيin جَمْعِgathering شَتاتِthe scattered parts العُلَىof glory

You gladdened the eye of the Chosen One, Ahmad;
You delighted the eye of Mustafa Ahmad
So his face is joyful and radiant.
So his face is cheerful and bright

A king who holds that winning glory
A king who sees gaining supremacy
Is a trade whose loser is a winner.
Is a losing trade, yet its loser is the gainer

His beneficence hastens to the horizons,
His benevolence spreads to the horizons
Like the sea, its waters going out at dawn and returning at dusk.
Like an overflowing sea, its water sweeping

His neighbor is well protected, his bounty free to all;
Impregnable to the neighbor, kind to the groves
God be praised for that protector and giver!
For God, the withholder and giver

Like rain, save for the gloom of its dark clouds;
Like rain, were it not for the ungratefulness from its clouds
Like a lion, save for its scowling face.
Like a lion, were it not for its grim face

Tell his enemy: turn back unharmed,
Say to his enemies, turn back in peace
For he is a sky whose lucky star is Sa'd Dhabih—the Slaughterer.
For he is a sky whose good fortune is slaughtering
