O dream-vision, O noblest vision ever to visit by night!

For its like, the eyes’ lids are bound shut.

The steeds of my tears and my blood raced one another

On the cheek’s racetrack; the red steeds took the lead.

You were generous; had I not seen you come to visit,

My eye would not have been freed from the bondage of sleeplessness.

Is there a way for me to quench my thirst

With the hailstones of that mouth, so evenly arrayed?

Slender is he; his brow and his hair

Trace their lineage to morning and dusk.

The green of his cheeks is springtime to my eye,

Like a branch when it first puts forth leaves.

His dusky lips are sweet; he sways with the wine of youth.

Blessed is whoever has kissed him or embraced him!

Beware the ember of his cheeks, for indeed

The beauty mark dared to venture onto it and burned.

O you who reproach me, I cannot forget

Him, nor is my love for him a matter of chance.

Let the heart, at the mention of love for him,

Throb, for it is excused when it throbs.

You were nothing, O sweetness of the time of union with him,

But something stolen from al-Sahib’s rule.
