    تًنْقُلُهُ عَنِّي رُوَاةُ الجُفُونْ

    My tears’ tale of my passion is full of sorrows;

The narrators—the eyelids—transmit it from me.

I marvel at the soundness of their reports,

Though they have been wounded by streaming tears.

My life for a dark-eyed one! Gathered together

In his languid eyelids are the arts of seduction.

He was fashioned from pearls, and far be it from him

To change in our gathering or prove faithless.

The magnet of the mole upon his cheek

Draws, by its beauty, the iron of eyes.

The scribe of his cheek-down excelled—the one who

Laid open before people what they inscribe.

    فَقالَ هذَا أَبَداً لا يَكُونْ

    I asked him to grant me a kiss;

So he said, ‘This will never be.’

Pass round dinars, for there have been strewn

Dirhams of blossom by the branches’ fingertips.

Charm my heart against the madness of love,

Against the lām of his two temple-locks, with qāf and nūn.

So may God withhold his care from my times! They have indeed

Made light of what in my affairs is no light matter.

Are you not of a people who, when darkness shrouds

The night of hopes, find their way by the star?
