So, is there anything for you in what you said at al-Khayf—is there?

So tell me, did you say in secret - do you have

شَرِبتَ مَعَ المَأمونِ كَأساً رَوِيَّةً

شَرِبتَ مَعَ المَأمونِ كَأساً رَوِيَّةً

فَاِنهَلَكَ المَأَمونُ مِنها وَعَلَّكا

فَاِنهَلَكَ المَأَمونُ مِنها وَعَلَّكا

You drank with the trusted one a thirst-quenching cup.

You drank with al-Ma'mun a cup, well-watered,

So the trusted one gave you a first draught from it, and a second.

So al-Ma'mun was ruined by it, and it elevated you,

وَخالَفَت أَسبابَ الهُدى وَتَبِعتَهُ

وَخالَفَت أَسبابَ الهُدى وَتَبِعتَهُ

فَاِنهَلَكَ المَأَمونُ مِنها وَعَلَّكا

فَاِنهَلَكَ المَأَمونُ مِنها وَعَلَّكا

And you went against the ways of guidance and followed him.

And you opposed the ways of guidance and followed it

So the trusted one gave you a first draught from it, and a second.

So al-Ma'mun was ruined by it, and it elevated you,

عَلى خُلُقٍ لَم تُلفِ أُمّاً وَلا أَباً

عَلى خُلُقٍ لَم تُلفِ أُمّاً وَلا أَباً

عَلَيهِ وَلَم تُدرِك عَلَيه أَخاً لَكا

عَلَيهِ وَلَم تُدرِك عَلَيه أَخاً لَكا

In a way of life that you found neither mother nor father

In a behavior you did not accustom a mother or father to

Following, nor did you encounter any brother of yours following it.

Nor did you attain upon it a brother for you.
