The calls of Umm Amr summoned you; had they called

a dead man among the graves, he would have kept answering her.

    أثابك جناتِ النعيم مُثيبُها

    So, O Umm Amr, reward one bound to you by kinship;

may their Bestower reward you with the gardens of bliss.

Reward a youth whose longing rises with the sun,

time and again, and whose sunset brings him longing.

    يُبلى به يا أم عمرٍو دَبيبُها

    He has a sigh, O Umm Amr, and a tear;

he is worn down by its slow trickling, O Umm Amr.

They say: some people suffer from love.

Indeed, none heals the soul but its beloved.

Just as no one heals me of longing and love

among all people but Umm Amr, the soul's physician.

Full-figured, she lights the house with beauty when she appears,

her garment's necklines lavishly anointed with saffron.

She captures hearts with her two hands when she shoots,

yet when she is shot at, the arrows miss or fail to strike her.

My two friends, there is no affliction you see

in my body but Umm Amr is its physician.

For Umm Amr, when evening finds her in a region

of the earth, is like nothing but rain falling upon it.

Rain has drawn near, or Umm Amr is close by:

hence the winds' lingering [reading uncertain] and their sweet scent.

If you stand in the path of the gently drifting wind,

it brings you her fragrance, and its blowing becomes sweet.

    تضوعُ ريحَ الضيمرانِ لُهُوبُها

    It crosses toward us over lofty, towering peaks;

their ravines waft the scent of wild basil.

Delicately nurtured, she is not so tall as to split her cloak,

nor does shortness mar Umm Amr.

She crushes anklets whose metal is densely wrought,

with her tender legs and flesh-rounded ankles.

And she winds her silk wrap about a small dune of her own,

perfectly formed, her dune surpassing the sands.

    When she spends the summer, she grows no fatter;

and if she grows wan, her wanness reveals no flaw.

It is easy for her to spend the night hungry,

while a guest, or some of the household, receives her share.

She keeps her shirt fastened, ever watchful

over it, when foolish women neglect their necklines.

She sleeps unmindful of food whose nourishment comes at once,

and spends the morning while the hands of women waking her attend her in turn.

So, O Umm Amr, no woman in a camel-litter passes

eastward without my heart going beside her as her led mount.

I am bound by an oath to compose no ode

of verse except of Umm Amr and the passion she kindles.

Will Umm Amr then reward me for my attachment

to her, and my exposing every slanderer who disparages her,

and my saying, whenever my sandal slips,

'O Umm Amr!'—a call she does not answer?

I love you as long as youthful ardor is a young man's life,

and as long as cloaks are woven in all their varied kinds.
