ولمand did not أَرI see ياO ظلامةَZulama (name) الدينal-Din (of the faith) مثلناlike us
أَشدَّmore intense عَويلاًin wailing حينwhen يَفترِقانِthey both part
And I have never seen, O Zulamat al-Din, a pair like us,
so bitter in their wailing when they part.
يُبَيِّنُmakes clear طَرفاناour two gazes بماof what فيin نُفُوسناour souls
إذاwhen استعجَمَتbecame inarticulate أنto تَنطِقَspeak الشفتانِthe two lips
Our two gazes reveal what lies within our souls,
when the lips become unable to speak.
وإنand even if حَجَبَblocked الواشوانَthe two talebearers رجعَthe echo of كلامِناour speech
فإنَّاthen indeed we بوحيthrough the secret messages of الطرفِthe gaze مُلتَقيَانِmeeting one another
And though the two talebearers stifle the echo of our words,
we still meet through the eyes’ unspoken messages.
