طَرَقَتْcame by night هُمومُكَyour cares فالرقادُso sleep مسهَّدُkept sleepless
وَجَزِعْتُand I grieved أَنْthat سُلِخَwas stripped away الشَّبابُyouth الأَغْيَدُsupple
Your cares came by night, and sleep is restless.
Your worries kept you awake, sleep was disrupted
And I grieved that supple youth was stripped away.
And I feared that exuberant youth had vanished
وَدَعَتْand called فؤادَكَyour heart للهَوَىto love ضمْريَّةٌa woman of Damrah
فهواكَso your beloved غوريٌّof the lowlands وصَحْبُكَand your companions مُنْجِدُheading for Najd
And a woman of Damrah called your heart to love.
And your heart was tempted by passion in secrecy
So your beloved is in the lowlands, while your companions head for Najd.
Your passion overpowered you, and your friends enabled it
فدَعِso abandon التَّمادِيَpersistence فيin الغَوايَةِerror سادِراًheedlessly
قَدْindeed كُنْتَyou were فيin طَلَبِpursuit of الغَوايَةِerror تُفْنَدُrebuked for folly
So cease persisting heedlessly in error.
So stop persisting in misguidance while aware
You have indeed been censured for pursuing error.
You used to seek misguidance enthusiastically
وَلَقَدْand indeed أَنَىthe time has come لَكَfor you أنْto تناهَىdesist طائِعاًwillingly

And surely it is time for you to desist willingly,
It would befit you to refrain willingly
Or come to your senses when the guide bids you stop.
Or wake up when the guide admonishes you
وَلَقَدْand indeed هُدِدْتُI was shattered لفَقْدِby the loss of حَمْزَةَHamza هُدَّةًa crushing blow

And Hamza's loss dealt me such a crushing blow
And I was threatened by Hamza's loss with great sorrow
That my entrails kept trembling from it.
That made my insides tremble continuously
وَلَوَand if أنَّهُthat it فَجِعَتْwas bereaved حِراءُHira بمِثْلِهِof one like him

And had Hira been bereaved of one like him,
And if Hiraa had lost one like him
You would surely have seen its two rocky summits crumble.
You would have seen its rocks fragmenting

A chieftain firmly established at the pinnacle of Hashim,
An obstinate one established in Hashim's sanctuary
Where prophethood, generosity, and eminence abide.
Where prophethood, bounty, and goodness originate

And he who slaughtered sturdy, high-humped camels when there blew at dawn
The barren mountain when winds blow
A wind that almost made the water freeze.
Becomes so cold water nearly freezes
والتارِكُand the one who leaves القِرْنَthe opponent الكَميَّthe armored warrior مُجَدَّلاًfelled

And he who left the armored opponent laid low,
The one who leaves his arched bow on days of war
On the day of battle, while the spears splintered.
While the enemy approaches with purpose
وتَراهُand you see him يَرْفُلُstrides proudly فيin الحديدِiron كَأَنَّهُas though he were

And you see him stride proudly in iron, as though he were
You see him clad in iron armor as if
A maned lion, thick-pawed and dusky gray.
He is solid with firm joints and a strong frame
عَمُّpaternal uncle of النبيِّthe Prophet مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad وَصَفِيُّهُand his chosen companion
وَردَcame to الحِمامَdeath فطابَso sweet was ذاكَthat المَوْرِدُwatering-place
The uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, and his chosen companion,
The Prophet's uncle, his chosen one
He came to death, and sweet was that watering-place.
Who restored purity to that watering place
وَأَتَىand he met المَنِيَّةَdeath مُعَلِماًbearing a battle-mark فيamong أُسْرَةٍa band

And he met death bearing his battle-mark among a band
And met his death while defending the Prophet
Who aided the Prophet; among them was the martyr.
Among martyrs who supported him dutifully
ولَقَدْand indeed إخالُI think بذاكَof that هِنْداًHind بُشِّرَتْwas given glad tidings

And indeed I think Hind was given glad tidings of that,
I wish the enemies who were given tidings with his death
To deaden the inner sting of a choking grief that never cools,
Would die feeling an unquenched bitterness
مِمّاfrom what صَبَحْنَاwe attacked at dawn بالعَقَنْقَلِat al-Aqanqal قَوْمَهاher people

From our dawn assault on her people at al-Aqanqal,
Due to how we routed them with spears
On a day when good fortune deserted her.
On a day when good fortune deserted them
وبِبِئرِand at the well of بَدْرٍBadr إذْwhen يَرُدُّturns back وُجُوهَهُمْtheir faces

And at the well of Badr, when their faces were turned back
At Badr's well when Gabriel
By Gabriel beneath our banner, and by Muhammad.
Turned back their faces under our banner and Muhammad
حَتَّىuntil رأيتُI saw لَدَىbefore النَّبيِّthe Prophet سَراتَهُمْtheir leaders
قِسْمَيْنِtwo groups يَقتُلُhe kills مَنْwhom نَشاءwe wish وَيطْرُدُand he drives away
Until I saw their leaders before the Prophet,
Until I saw their heads before the Prophet
In two groups: he killed whom we wished and drove the others away.
As two halves we kill and repel at will
فأقامَso there remained بالعَطَنِat the camels' watering-ground المُعَطَّنِprepared for resting camels مِنْهُمُof them
سَبْعونseventy عتبةُUtbah مِنْهمُamong them والأسْوَدُand al-Aswad
So at the camels' appointed watering-ground there remained of them
Seventy chiefs of them remained in the valley
Seventy—Utbah among them, and al-Aswad.
Including Utbah and Al-Aswad
وابنُand the son of المغيرَةِal-Mughirah قَدْindeed ضَرَبْناwe struck ضَرْبَةًa blow

And al-Mughirah's son—we had struck him a blow
And we dealt Ibn Mughirah a fatal strike
Above the jugular vein, with a foaming spray.
With spraying blood from his neck's vein
وَأُيَّةُand Uyyah الجُمَحيُّal-Jumahi قَوَّمَstraightened مَيْلَهُhis crookedness

And Uyyah al-Jumahi—his crookedness was straightened
And Uyyah Al-Jumahi steadied his stance
By a keen, Indian-forged sword in the believers' hands.
With a sword gripped by the faithful forcefully
فأتاكَso there came to you فَلُّthe routed remnant of المشرِكينَthe polytheists كَأَنَّهُمْas though they were

So the routed remnant of the polytheists came to you, as though they were
So their defeated king came to you as if they were
Ostriches scattered in flight, while the horses drove them on.
Ostriches scattered by horses speedily

How far apart are the one who dwells in Hell
Vast is the difference between one who in Hell resides forever
Forever, and the one who dwells eternally in the Gardens!
And one who in Gardens is eternally blissful
